Portable Appliance Testing - The Test Explained.

All appliances will be subjected to the relevant Portable Appliance tests where applicable as set out in the IEE/IET Code of Practice, The appliance must be switched off during the testing period but we promise disruption will be kept to an absoloute minimum. Alternatively we offer an "Out of Office Hours" Service.

Environment suitability: To ensure that the appliance is of the correct type to be used safely in the environment where it is located and for the type of work being carried out.

Formal Visual Inspection: 1) Of the Plug to ensure it is not damaged or displaying signs of over-heating or corrosion, We will also check that the fuse is of the correct rating for the appliance and its cable length, replacing any fuses that are incorrect. 2) Of the Cable to ensure a continuous layer of outer insulation is present with no splits, cracks or damage. 3) Of the Appliance to ensure it is fully functioning with no signs of damage to the casing and that no live parts are accessible by the user. In some instances where it is prohibited to turn off an appliance, for example a PC Server we will conduct a this part of the testing only.

Earth Bond (Class 1 Equipment Only). To test the appliances Earth Continuity through its casing to ensure it falls within the acceptable pass values. - When testing sensitive equipment such as PC’s, Monitors, and Photocopiers etc we will conduct a soft test using a lesser current to prevent damage to sensitive electronics.

Insulation Test (Class 1 and 2 equipment).
This test links the live and neutral connections together and applies a test voltage measuring the resistance of the insulation layer to make sure that no electrical conduction to the appliances outer casing can occur. Polarity Test (For Power Leads and Extension Leads). This test will check that the live termination plug is connected to the live outlet socket of the lead ensuring all connections are complete and not crossed in any form

Labelling and Data Management.
Once the appliance has been subjected to the above tests it will be entered onto a database containing the appliance type, an ID number and the test result, if the item passes a Green Pass sticker will be attached, if it fails a red Fail sticker will be attached and the item will be removed from service and disabled, the item will be added to a fail log which will be brought to your attention on a daily basis allowing you to choose which course of action you wish to pursue – minor repairs can be carried out by ourselves inclusive of the per item fee however major repairs are not included in the per item fee and can be quoted accordingly.

To add further value to our fee and to assist with building an ongoing working relationship we can offer a barcode label system that enables us to maintain an accurate, meaningful year on year service history of all of your appliances allowing us to remove any Appliance that shows a significant year on year deterioration before an accident or injury occurs – We can also use this system to notify you when an Item(s) is due for re-test including the item, it’s location and frequency of testing required. The use of the barcode system means the PAT labels/Test Certificate can double up as an accurate asset management record.

We are City and Guilds Qualified PAT Testers
